Le mot de Cambronne
Le mot de Cambronne pretty much summarizes the market from the big picture passive investing point of view. The first plot above shows the results for a portfolio of 20 low Beta/low R-Squared stocks versus SPY. The financial sector problems have erased the broad market returns of the past two years.
The down market makes the case for a more active approach to investing. For example, the second plot above shows the equity curve for a long only mechanical trading system over the same time period as the first plot. The 3x2 trading method is making new equity highs as SPY continues to sink. Perhaps some of your long term money should be committed to a trading approach.

Endgame
What is your endgame? Does it involve the Quest for the Grail?
Dr Brett referenced an article last week about the training of elite athletes. The most important aspect of the training was the complete focus on technique. The focus on technique is certainly something that we can use in the quest to become a trader. However, to become an elite athlete you must begin at a very young age. Becoming an elite trader also involves a large amount of time. Do you have that kind of time? The mediocre trader goal is likely more in line with the time available to pursue your quest.
The Cameron Systems website makes some good points about 'The Quest of the Grail Knight'. In particular the necessity of asking the right questions, keeping an open mind, and putting all possibilities on the table.
Time grows short. Immediately begin the planning for your endgame. But, always remember that the greatest work can also be the greatest curse.
